Round 7: UTS St George Sparks 51 defeated ERNA Hawks 44
UTS St George Sparks defeated ERNA Hawks 51-44 in Round 7 of the Samsung Premier League, knocking the Hawks out of their top-of-the-table position at the Genea Netball Centre on Wednesday 12 July.
The Hawks were strong out of the blocks, scoring a turnover off the Sparks’ first centre and pulling ahead 5-1 in the opening minutes of the game.
But the Sparks were quick on their heels with strong defence delaying the Hawks in their attacking end and opening up opportunities for intercepts as they forced more passes within the Hawks’ attack. Sparks C Kaitlyn Bryce capitalised on such an opportunity, stealing a crucial intercept in the closing minutes of the quarter which gave her side two quick goals to even the score, 13-all, at the first break.
Sparks had the first centre pass of the second quarter and took the lead for the first time in the game. Hawks fought back to even the scoreline, with new substitute GA Amy Sommerville creating feeding opportunities with her strong drives into the circle. This allowed the Hawks’ attack to evade the Sparks’ defence and increase their game speed in the attacking end, but it was Sparks who held onto the lead 38-34 heading into the final quarter.
An early fourth quarter intercept from Hawks WD J Rickard Bell may have been the opportunity that Hawks needed to catch the Sparks, but an intercept in response, from Sparks C Belynda Loveday, stifled the their opportunity to convert.
Tips from the Sparks defence provided crucial turnovers that allowed them extend their lead with unstoppable momentum, running out the Hawks 51-44 on the final buzzer.
