Round 11: UTS St George Sparks 51 d Panthers 41
UTS St George Sparks secured a convincing come from behind win over the Penrith Panthers 51-41 in their Round 11 Samsung Premier League clash at the Genea Netball Centre on Wednesday 9 August. The win lifts Sparks up to second place on the Under 20s ladder, trailing the Panthers by one point with three Rounds left until the 2018 Finals Series.

It was a slow start to this first versus third match up, UTS St George Sparks struggling to find a groove with their centre pass. As the quarter progressed Panthers GA Megan Bull was instrumental in assisting her team to take the lead with impressive long range shooting. At the same end of the court Sparks GK Matilda McDonnell was doing her best to stop the goals, creating two intercepts within the first minute of play. Panthers GK Renee Mihaere collected numerous rebounds also and at the first break Panthers lead 13-11.

Sparks brought on Madeline Eaton as GA to start the second quarter. Eaton had an immediate impact with her fast feet and clear passes key as Sparks took the lead for the first time. Misplaced passes seemed to be the Panthers’ downfall in this quarter, with Sparks out scoring them 16-6 to go into the half time break leading 27-19.

Both teams came out firing in the second half but Sparks GK McDonnell was reading the Panthers’ plays with ease, which was demonstrated by her multiple intercepts. St George GS Georgia Westwood was also having a cracking game, scoring nine from nine in the quarter and at the last break Sparks lead 39-30.

In the last period it took exactly ten seconds for the Sparks to score the first goal and fifteen more for the Panthers to respond, setting the tone for the last quarter – fast and furious. Panthers managed to find a rhythm and reduced the goal difference slowly but unfortunately for them the Sparks shooters were on target to build back their lead. With three minutes on the clock, Sparks led by 10 and they continued to score with the final margin 51-41.
