Round 11: UTS St George Sparks 59 d Panthers 38

UTS St George Sparks had their seventh win of the season against the Panthers, 59-38, in their Round 11 Samsung Premier League Opens game at the Genea Netball Centre on Wednesday 9 August.

The Panthers had the first centre pass and got the scoreboard rolling but the Sparks retaliated with their own barrage of goals, to outscore the Penrith side 18-9 by the first quarter break.

The Panthers came out attacking the second quarter and scored three consecutive goals with significant turnovers slowly reducing the goal deficit. They continued to attack steadily, however, the Sparks’ defensive team was up for the challenge, contesting every ball for the whole quarter. At the half time break Sparks continued to lead 31-22, maintaining the nine-goal lead.

The second half of the game increased in intensity and was evidenced by the reduced attempts at goals. Both teams were playing a tight-knit game with the Panthers trying to insert themselves back into it for a chance to gain their second win of the season. But the Sparks’ midcourt was creating opportunities to feed the ball down the court and the Panthers struggled to stop them. At the three-quarter break the Sparks lead 42-32, a 10-goal lead with one quarter remaining.

As the teams took to the court for the final fifteen minutes, the Sparks looked as if they had more to give and give they did.

They scoring another 17 goals to the Panthers’ six in the final period to build a buffer of 21 goals with only a minute to go and from there it was game over.
