Round 7: ERNA Hawks 43 defeated UTS Sparks 41

Hawks just outran the Sparks to win 43-41 in Round 7 of the Samsung Premier League at the Genea Netball Centre on Wednesday 12 July.

ERNA gained an early lead by getting the first four goals on the scoreboard while the Sparks struggled to feed the circle, forcing GS Madeline Eaton to play outside it to give more attacking options to her team.

Sparks soon found their feet, however, winning some impressive intercepts especially as the Hawks’ attack drove into the pockets of their attacking third but ERNA’s dominant start was enough to secure them a 14-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

GS Rhiannon Stokes was particularly impressive in the Hawks’ shooting circle, sinking goals at a 94% accuracy and helping her team stay ahead by the end of the second quarter, 23-19, despite continual pressure from the Sparks.

After a halftime break the Sparks seemed ready to chase down the Hawks. A mid-quarter substitution saw GS Georgia Westwood take the court and she landed a difficult goal attempt within a few seconds of her arrival. The change seemed to signal a shift in momentum for Sparks with a notable intercept then coming from GD Paige Pirotta as the team chased down the Hawks, who led 33-31 at the end of the third quarter.

Tight one-on-one defence from both teams kept constant pressure up as both teams fought for the win. With five minutes left the score was 39-all after an impressive climb from Sparks who overtook the Hawks to lead for the first time in the final four minutes.

It was Hawks, however, who converted a crucial turnover from their defensive end and stole back the lead from top-of-the-ladder Sparks in the closing seconds of the game to win 43-41.
