Round 5 Sparks v Heart : U20s
July 1, 2017
The Central Coast Heart and UTS St George Sparks played out a thrilling 54-54 draw in their Round 5 clash at the Genea Netball Centre on Wednesday 28 June.
In what was one of the best games of the season so far, the Heart came back from a horror first quarter – which they lost 18-9 – to win the final three and draw level with their opponents.
The draw meant the Sparks kept their unbeaten – but not unblemished – start to the season alive with four wins already in the bag before this clash, while the result will give the Heart great confidence for the rest of the season – they sit seventh on the table with one win and three losses also to their name.
Down by nine goals to the league leaders at quarter-time, many teams would have folded but the Central Coast outfit showed great grit and determination to get themselves back into a pulsating contest.
They won the second quarter 16-13 to leave a margin of six goals between the sides at halftime but it was their third quarter performance that really put the Sparks under pressure.
The Heart won that period 16-12 to move within two goals of their opponents, and heading into the last quarter it was very much game on.
Both sides put in a huge effort in the final 15 minutes but, luckily for the Heart, they just had enough to edge the end-to-end quarter by two goals and earn a share of the spoils.
If anything, the game showed how little there is between all of the teams in what has been a fantastic opening five rounds to the 2017 competition.
