Round 11: Sutherland Stingrays 63 d UTS St George Sparks 46
Division: Opens

A consistent four quarter performance from the Sutherland Stingrays saw them walk away with a 63-46 win over the UTS St George Sparks in Round 11 of the Samsung Premier League at Netball Central on Wednesday 6 July .

The Stingrays were too strong for the Sparks throughout the match and continued to extend their lead as the match continued.

It was a fast paced opening quarter from the Stingrays as they looked to take control of things early. Tight defence from the Stingrays forced the Sparks to make errors which allowed Sutherland to capitalise and they went into the first break with a three-goal lead.

The second quarter started much like the first with the Stingrays strong out of the blocks and extending their lead. Strong defensive pressure from the Stingrays forced the Sparks to make errors and turn the ball over. The Stingrays held the Sparks to a six-goal quarter while they extended their lead to 14 heading into the main break.

Full court changes from the Sparks in the third quarter saw a renewed energy as they looked to close the gap, however, the Stingrays remained consistent and continued to extend their lead as the Sparks struggled to convert under the goalpost early in the quarter.

Stingrays Goal Attack Leah Price had a consistent night under the post (89%) and was on target from all over the circle.

The final quarter saw both teams put in strong performances, both scoring 14 goals. The quarter maintained the same intensity from previous periods but the early Stingrays lead was too much for the Sparks to reel in.

Both teams will now have a much deserved break during bye week before returning to action on Wednesday 20 July.

Round 11 – Sutherland Stingrays 44 d UTS St George Sparks 41
Division: U20s

A strong defensive performance from the Sutherland Stingrays saw them walk away with a three goal, 44-41 win in a very close encounter with UTS St George Sparks at Netball Central on Wednesday 6 July.

The match showed how close the competition is between the two teams with the Stingrays never exceeding a four-goal lead throughout the the match. Defensive pressure from both teams saw a number of turnovers with the opposition capitalising on them at the other end of the court.

Teams were often forced to look backwards for their next pass as the pressure continued into the second half. Held balls were called on more than a handful of occasions, another sign of the tough defensive pressure being placed down the court.

The Stingrays maintained a one-goal lead throughout the third quarter as teams went goal for goal before an error by the Stingrays allowed the Sparks to take the lead for the first time in the match. The Stingrays regained the lead in the final few minutes to head into the final break with a two-goal lead, however.

With the match being so close throughout, and the Stingrays holding a two-goal lead heading into the final quarter, the match went down to the wire. Positional changes from the Sparks saw a renewed energy in the opening minutes of the last quarter before the Stingrays settled again and went on to win by three goals.

Both teams will now enjoy a bye before returning to Netball Central for Round 12 of the Samsung Premier League on Wednesday 20 July.
