Round 5: UTS St George Sparks 50 d Central Coast Heart 29
Division: Under 20s

UTS St George Sparks have posted a 50-29 victory over Central Coast Heart last night, Wednesday 18 May, at Netball Central, after a solid 60 minute performance.

There was little between both sides in a first quarter with both portraying strong defensive pressure, which created a low-scoring affair. The result saw the attacking ends work hard to break the strong defensive hold, trying to break the deadlock; the first was Sparks who quickly found their gear.

Both teams started the second half with the full confidence and intent to win, with the battle of the midcourt a standout feature of the game. However again the Sparks asserted their dominance on the match through their strong defensive pressure; the Heart coming up with no answers as to how they could overcome it.

By the third quarter the Sparks find some fusion between their transitional play, with Maddy Eaton providing a strong target in their shooting circle thanks to her lightening quick speed and accuracy. The Sparks’ dominating third quarter performance eventually saw their 10 goal lead extend out to 19 goals.

Despite all they could throw at the contest, Heart couldn’t contain Sparks’ strong finish as they tried valiantly to claw back the deficit on the scoreboard. But the Sparks continued with their momentum to eventually finish 21-goal victors.

Looking to consolidate consecutive wins, the Sparks will now play ERNA Hawks in Round 6 while the Heart will look for their second win of the season as they will face Sutherland Stingrays next Wednesday 18 May on Netball Central’s Show Court.

Round 5: UTS St George Sparks 55 d Central Coast Heart 34
Division: Opens

A hard fought performance saw the UTS St George Sparks clench their fourth victory of the season with a 55-34 victory over Central Coast Heart last night, Wednesday 18 May, at Netball Central.

Despite a tight battle between second-placed Sparks and fifth-place Heart to begin with, it was the former who took the first advantage on the scoreboard by going into the first break with a three goal lead.

The Heart rallied in the second quarter, but their push on the scoreboard was short-lived as the Sparks again found momentum halfway through the stanza. The Sparks defence helped pushed Heart to play wide and take the longer options, forcing the Heart out of their natural game and helping set up intercepts for possession to change hands.

The Sparks provided much of the same for the second half; seamless midcourt transitions coupled with accurate goal shooting, which assisted in further extending their lead. But the Heart weren’t to be discouraged and continued to through everything into their performance to get back in the gae.

In the end Sparks proved too strong for the Heart, with their defensive pressure and quick-scoring play leading to the 21-goal victory.

Following their win, the Sparks will now play ERNA Hawks in Round 6 while the Heart will face Sutherland Stingrays next Wednesday 18 May at Netball Central.
